Vegan Chocolate Cherry Cookies

Chocolate Cherry Cookies are a beloved classic across the USA, blending deep, rich cocoa flavour with the sweet, juicy pop of cherries — reminiscent of the famous Black Forest cake in cookie form. This vegan version keeps every bit of that indulgent, fudgy texture and perfectly balanced sweet‑tart taste, using plant‑based fats and egg substitutes so no animal products are needed at all. They are soft, deeply chocolatey, and finished with a glossy drizzle for that extra special touch.

đź›’ Ingredients

  • 1½ cups all‑purpose flour,, ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup brown sugar,, ÂĽ cup granulated sugar
  • â…“ cup melted coconut oil or vegan butter
  • ÂĽ cup unsweetened applesauce or mashed banana (acts as egg replacer)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract,, ½ tsp baking soda,, Pinch of salt
  • 10–12 maraschino cherries or fresh pitted cherries, patted dry
  • Topping: Melted vegan dark chocolate for drizzling

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.

  2. 2

In a larger bowl, mix the melted coconut oil, both sugars, applesauce, and vanilla until smooth and well combined.

  3. 3

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring gently until a soft dough forms — do not overmix.

  4. 4

Scoop equal portions of dough onto the baking sheet, leaving space between each one. Press a cherry gently into the centre of every cookie.

  5. 5

Bake for 10–12 minutes; they will feel soft straight out of the oven but will firm up as they cool.

  6. 6

Let them cool completely, then drizzle with melted vegan chocolate. Enjoy once the chocolate sets.
