Biji salak

Biji salak It is a traditional Indonesian dessert made from sweet potatoes shaped into balls resembling snake fruit seeds, served in a sweet, pandan-scented brown sugar sauce and a drizzle of thick coconut milk. This dish is made completely without eggs, milk, or other animal products but still maintains a soft chewy texture, the natural sweetness of palm sugar, and the savory taste of coconut milk that blend perfectly. It's so special because of its heartwarming simplicity, a beloved home-like memory. Perfect for a warm dessert or afternoon snack. A treat for a rainy day, or a sweet treat that is safe for all vegans and traditional food lovers to enjoy.

🛒 Ingredients

  • Sweet potato ball ingredients:
  • 500 grams of yellow sweet potato/purple sweet potato, steam until soft then peel
  • 100 to 120 grams of tapioca flour/sago flour
  • A pinch of fine salt
  • Brown sugar sauce:
  • 250 grams of finely grated brown sugar/palm sugar
  • 700 ml of clean water
  • Two pandan leaves, tie a knot
  • A pinch of salt
  • One pandan leaf

👩‍🍳 Instructions

  1. 1

While the sweet potato is still hot, mash it until smooth and mix with the salt. Gradually add the tapioca flour, kneading until the dough forms a shape and doesn't stick to your hands.

  2. 2

Take a little dough, make it into balls the size of a snake fruit seed, do this until the dough is finished.

  3. 3

Boil water with brown sugar, pandan leaves and salt until the sugar dissolves and boils. Add the cooked sweet potato balls until they float (a sign that they are cooked) then let them boil for a while so that the sugar is absorbed

  4. 4

Boil the coconut milk with salt and pandan leaves over low heat, stirring constantly so it doesn't break, until it boils slowly, then remove from heat.

  5. 5

Serve the sweet potato balls with the warm brown sugar sauce and drizzle with coconut milk to taste. The dish is ready to serve!
